Should english field boots be skin tight at the top?

I just got a new pair of tall english field boots. I have a wide calf, so these are THE ONLY pair I could find with a wide enough calf, the only problem is that it fits everywhere except the very top, it gapes open about an inch on either side of the very top. is this ok? or should I think about having them tailored?

When the boots break in, they will drop down an inch or two, then the gap at teh top will be fartehr down your calf and they might fit better.

If they're comfortable once they break in, and they look ok when you ride in them, why bother?

If it truly is a problem with fit and comfort, then yes, have them tailored, but remeber- if you shrink the top opening, they might not fit over your calves any more to put them on! You may want to consider having a zipper put in.
