Ladies Tights - The History of Hosiery

Ladies tights are one fashion item that never actually goes out of fashion. Fashions change but we will always wear tights (or pantyhose as they’re known in the US) in some form or the other. Following the invention of nylon in the 1930's "nylons" became universally popular in the 1960's and since then women have relied on them for comfortable, affordable every day use.

Nylon quickly became an affordable alternative material to the more expensive silk but nowadays tights and stockings are made from various affordable materials. The use of Lycra prevents tights going baggy at the ankles, which was a common problem for ladies in the 1950s; it also adds the stretch that keeps our tights up without wrinkling! We've even moved on to developing shaping bodywear, tights that help to tone and shape certain areas, such as the bum and tum.

A popular, classic material for making winter tights to keep you warm and toasty is wool, as it's soft, comfortable and available in lots of colours. Wool tights are the perfect way to look stylish but stay warm during the winter months, and some very current colours include rich autumnal reds and deep, luscious purples.

When the weather warms up a little but you still like to keep your legs covered good, old-fashioned opaque tights always do the trick. A far cry from the days of sheer nylons, opaque tights have served women well for the last few decades. They're available in many colours and deniers.

The denier is measured by the thickness of the weave of the material that the tights are made from and the higher the denier the thicker the tights. Opaque tights are generally 40 denier or above, while sheer tights range from 5 denier to 30 denier usually, but often have re-inforced toes and tops.

Sheer tights come in many different materials as well as the denier is determined by the thickness of the tights and not the material that they are made from.

Whether you prefer opaque tights, support tights, sheer tights, coloured tights, footless tights, or suspender tights there are so many different tights out there to choose from that the list is almost endless.

If you feel that tights aren’t very sexy you can always wear their alternative, hold ups or stockings. Hold ups (stay ups or thigh highs) and stockings, keep your legs covered but are considered to feel sexier and therefore often chosen for more special occasions. Just as ladies tights are available in a whole rainbow of colour variations, different materials and deniers, you can also get stockings and hold ups for every outfit.

Ladies tights will no doubt stay a staple of most women's wardrobes eventhough fashions in colour and materials change over time!
