Black and Tan Coonhounds questions about size, cost, and barking.?
I'm planning on geting a dog soon and my ideal dog would be a Black and Tan Coonhound. I heard that if you get them when there puppys and untrained that they would not bark when they see coons and other animals is that true? Also how big do they get and how much would they cost an untraine puppy?
We have a redbone coonhound (she's about 5 now) and a black and tan (she's still a pup only 5-6 months) They WILL bark no matter what. It's the hound breed. It might not necessarily be at raccoons all the time, but it will be at squirrels, birds, other animals, other people, each other, a frog that just trying to make his way across the yard even with a dog 2 inches from him barking.... They don't care they will bark. But like any dog if you keep them interested in something and don't just leave them in the yard they shouldn't just bark for no reason.
They get rather large, they are usually one of the tallest of the coonhound breeds, and can weigh easily up to 75-80 lbs. Our pup still has alot of growing to do and she's already 45lbs. Depending on where you are and the breeders they vary in price but I think the most expensive I've ever seen one was $400. We recently paid $200 for our black and tan. Then again we have alot of hunters in my area in NY and coonhounds are bred often (with papers and good lines, even though the dogs are just "dogs" to most the people, they do want to breed good lines). There are also TONS of these dogs in rescue b/c people get them and then are not prepared for the intelligence (they are meant to go off and find the prey on their own and know what to do with it) and the typical "hound" mentality of following their nose and easily getting lost since they tend to zone everything else out around them until they find the source of the smell they have. So if you can I suggest looking at one of the rescues too, there are lots of young dogs and even puppies!
