Tips For Creating Your Own Invitations At Home

You'd be amazed at how many varieties there are of free printable party invitations in these contemporary times. It seems like no matter what the occasion, there are an unbelievable number of free downloadable invitations you can print at home. There are, of course, plenty of the more mainstream variety, such as anniversary invitation templates. But there's also a huge selection of invitations you can get free for very specific party types. For example, there are free circus party invitations and many others.

Do-it-yourself invites are relatively easy to produce if you know how to use a word processing program, such as MS Word, Open Office or AbiWord; or a publishing program, like Microsoft Publisher or The Print Shop Professional. You just pop the invitation image into the software, size it and print as many copies as you want. As basic as that may be, though, there are some subtleties it pays to be aware of when making the invitations. The following tips will help you understand those subtle elements and allow you to get the most value out of invitation art:

• If you're using word processing software program, you can use tables or text boxes to get more than one invitation image on a page. This will save time and card stock. (You'll probably find that using a table is the easier technique to use. If you're not acquainted with using text boxes or tables, read the help menu of your word processing software program.) Be sure to match up at least one edge of the invitation art to the other, because that will eliminate one cut that you'll eventually have to make.

• When you're ready to cut the invitations, the most efficient method is to use a paper cutter. If you don't happen to have one lying around the house, you can pay someone to cut them at a print shop, office supply store or copy center. If there isn't a store with a paper cutter in your area, another approach is to use an ruler, X-acto knife and some kind of board that will protect your tabletop from cuts. And if all else fails, you can use scissors. If you go that route, draw light pencil lines first, so you'll see where you should cut. If you know you can't cut straight, you might try using patterned scissors to create a decorative edge that will hide flaws.

• Once your invitations are cut, you can embellish them to make them unique. You'll find a vast array of suitable decorations at your neighborhood craft store. These include stickers, brads, rhinestones, artificial flowers and many other types of additions. Glitter glue or dimensional paint can also be used to make the invitations truly your own. Be careful with this, however, because this is one area that less is truly more. You might try using the glue or paint on only the highlights, not the main areas of the design. And you'll want to have extra invitations on-hand, so you can play with it until you get the best look.
