Information on the Belgian Draught Horse

As the name suggests. This breed originated in Belgium. Way back in Medievil times, central Western Europe was renound for the grand black horses called "Flemish". These horses are the ones which carried the armour-clad knights to war. The largest and most powerful horses were chosen to become "chargers" or "destriers". From this stock, genetic make-up was drawn for other breeds.  At the heart of this area, Belgium was established as a country. The regions stallions' were shipped throughout Europe as larger draught horses were demanded to work in both agricultural and industrial environments. 

As Belgium was the resource upon which other countries depended for these large stock horses, all that remained was for the country to establish the breed and increase the strength of the genetic makeup already at hand. The Belgian government quickly helped to refine the breed by setting up district shows, from which the winners would move up to compete in the national show in Brussels. The country's inspection committee selected from the national the finest stallions for public services. These efforts resulted in the speedy improvement of the fixed breed type and the Belgian horse was then establised as a national treasure. 

When the Belgian was initially imported into the States, they were slated for being "too thick, too low-headed, straight shouldered, and round-boned". However, the Belgian horse soon settled in with American farmers due to their good dispositions, willingness to work hard and the fact that they were easy to maintain. The Belgian remained and the American horse breeders aimed to correct any wrongdoings. The outcome is widely regarded as one of the most successful breeding stories ever made. American Belgian's possess strong feet, a solid middle, good muscle as well as a good temperament. Belgian horses are are easy to care for, ship well and are willing workers. American breeders very simply developed a horse with cleaner lines, more slope in the shoulders and pasterns, and a more elegant look around the head and neck. 

Description
With reards to color, whilst the first Belgians to be imported to America were a wide mix, about half were bay and bay-brown. However, there was really no particular color which was a defining characteristic. Through breeding, shown by American preference, the ideal for a Belgian in the U.S. A typical Belgian has a sorrel or chesnut coat with a snow white mane, a white stripe on the face and white socks. You can, in other areas of the world find a large variety of different colours. 

In height, the Belgian is usually 16 hands (162.5 centimeters, or 64 inches) at the shoulder, but can exceed 18 hands (183 cm or 72 inches) to the shoulder. American Belgian horses are normally found to have a bigger head, more stunted and compact legs (feathered) and big hind-quarters. 

The typical weight is 1600 to 2000 pounds (113.6 to 142 stones), but Belgian stallions can be in excess of 2400 pounds (170.4 stones).
