Dance Moves For Sock Hops

Your dress should be consistent with the style of the times, as should your dance moves. Finding an outfit might be easy, but figuring out appropriate dance moves can prove to be a little more difficult.

In the 1950's, sock hops were in their prime, meaning that most dances that are associated with sock hops came from that time period. Some of these popular dances were the hand jive, the jitterbug, the cha cha, and the bop. Any of these dances would be wonderful to learn for a sock hop, but a basic slow dance and fast dance will get your through the night just fine and will be much easier to learn.

With the fast dance, men first step in place with their left foot, keeping their heel up. They then step again, keeping their heel down. They do the same thing with their right foot, and take a step back with their left foot before returning to the starting position.

For the ladies, it's the same steps as the men performed, but they begin with and step back on their right foot. A simple way to remember this dance is right toe touch, right step, left toe touch, left step and right foot back. The men can use this to memorize their steps, too, but must remember to do the opposite of the ladies!

For hand positions, men will place their right hand on the ladies waste and will hold her right hand with their left. Remember to keep elbows bent and hands in line with the shoulders. The ladies will place their left hand on the shoulder of their partner and their right hand in their partner's left.

The slow dance steps are just as easy: men will first step forward using their left foot, and will then slide their right foot up, even with their left. Then, they will move their right foot to the right, sliding their left over alongside their right. The right foot will step back, after which the left foot will slide back to meet it.

Finally, the left foot will be brought to the left, and the right foot will be brought to the left to bring you back to starting position. The part of the ladies' is the same, only opposite the men's. When the men step forward with their left, ladies will step back with their right.

As you become more familiar with these steps, try improvising a little and adding your own style to them! These two dance moves are simple to learn and will add to your sock hop experience. But remember to look the part, not just dance it!
