what is automatic gain control (agc) in reflection seismic processing?

How is applied to a seismic data?
What is long gate agc?

Agc adjusts for the energy loss the seismic wave experiences when dispersing in the hemisphere by increasing the amplitude of a signal based on it's traveltime. You normally apply it directly in your processing tool commonly it's among the first steps of processing. You could also apply this during measurement with some systems but generally it's better to record the data as is and start fiddling with it later. Note that it's not recommended to use when working with gpr datasets though.
