Do Red Leopard Geckos Exist?

Are you looking for a red leopard gecko? There is still an ongoing search among some enthusiasts for a truly red lizard. However, a truly red one is yet to hit the market. But, there are many morphs out there that have been associated with the color red and if you plan to breed the lizards to eventually produce a red one, it may be best to know more about these morphs.

 

The Red Stripe

 

One of the first lizards you'd probably see when you look for a red leopard gecko is the red stripe. This morph gets its name for the two red-orange stripes running down its back. Depending on the preference of the breeder, you may find some that have more orange than red or vice versa. Try to pick out the ones with more red in them. With luck, you can eventually produce more red coloration with every passing generation. You can find lizards like this for around $100 to $300.

 

The Orange Red Lizards

 

Although most will be tangerine or orange, some lizards display more orange red. This is a darker orange than the more brilliant orange some lizards are known for. This orange-red color can be found in the tangerine and hypo tangerine lines. The hypo tangerines are a special breed of tangerine lizard that are hypo melanistic, meaning they carry with them a reduced amount of melanin, which is responsible for the black spots and patterns in the lizards skin. These hypo tangerines can sometimes have almost no black spots on their bodies because of this, resulting in an almost solid orange-red body. Again, further selective breeding should produce even more pronounced redness.

 

Carrot Tails

 

Some lizards are known for their orange tails. Again, this orange can appear to be redder than others. These carrot-tails, as they are known among breeders and enthusiasts, can have as much as 90% of their tails in full orange red coloration. The beautiful thing about carrot tails is that they can be combined with most of the other known morphs and patterns without too much difficulty. This means you can get a solid orange red body with an almost fully red tail as well.

 

Red Eyes

 

You can also breed lizards with red eyes. This is a popular trend among some enthusiasts as well. The Diablo Blanco and the Albino lines are sometimes selectively bred to produce red or ruby eyes variants. The RAPTOR line is in fact a ruby eyed APTOR or Ruby Eyed, Albino, Patternless, Tremper, Orange (that's what RAPTOR means!).

 

Selective Breeding

 

With all of this knowledge, you should have a good starting point on how to create you very own designer lizard. However, selective breeding isn't always going to be that simple. It might take years to develop a truly red lizard. It is quite worth it though. Many of the breeds and morphs today were actually the result of accidents and luck… so with a bit of both, who knows what kind of breeds and morphs you can come up with?
