Why do my shin splints hurt when i try to massage them? Leg Area becomes red and Hurts badly?

I dont even massage alot and i try to do the sports massages and cross frictions myself but when i try to do deep/penetrating massage the leg starts hurting bad and the area turns red and it freakin hurts...why? and what should i do? i also stretch my calves and stuff too and do the calf exercises

Shin splints is already an inflammation of the soft tissues along the surface of the tibia (leg bone). Most suggestions are ice and rest, especially during the height of inflammation (post workout usually). The area is turning red because you are massaging the area. This creates blood flow to the skin. The pain is probably coming from the already present inflammation. Cross fiber friction is probably not helping you. Try slower, less pressure, longer gliding movements from foot to knee to help the venous blood, inflammation and lymph to be "milked" out of the area.

The calf stretches and exercises are probably helping, but obviously not enough. Some people swear by a simple exercise that contracts and strengthens the anterior compartment of the leg (the muscles between the knee and ankle on the lateral (outside) part of the leg) to help correct re-occuring shin splint problems.
