Why do we break lent on St Patricks Day?
Why do we break lent on St Patricks day??? I would like to know the answer.
It's not that we break lent, but that we need not fast or abstain on that special day. St. Patrick's is a day of celebration and much of the celebration encourages a certain identity with the Catholic faith, so it is to be encouraged. Celebration and penance don't usually go together, so many dioceses counsel their members to suspend their penance for the day to join in the very public, very Catholic celebration of the great saint.
That is the same reason, by the way, that we are not to fast or abstain on Sundays. Sunday is a day of great celebration for Catholics, as it is when we remember the resurrection, so it would be inappropriate to require fast or abstinence on that day.
