Are nude/tan pantyhose more modest than black pantyhose?
I have a black cocktail dress that is rather short (mid-thigh) and I have worn both nude/tan pantyhose as well as black with it (BTW, I wear closed toe pumps with the dress) and am just not sure if one is better than the other. I asked a similar question a while back and the end result was that if I wanted to show off the shoes to wear black and if I wanted to show off the dress to wear nude/tan. I am just wondering if one color is perceived to be more modest than the other. Thanks!!!
This is a good question, as I usually don't think too much in terms of modesty when I dress; mostly, I try to think in terms of the flow and coordination of the outfit.
Some suggest that black is classy and elegant, but that rule isn't universal. On an evening dress, yes, black is very elegant. But on a short cocktail dress, black is provocative and daring.
The modesty of skin-tone hosiery can also vary, depending on the finish. If it is satiny or glossy, it naturally draws more attention to the legs. A more matte or powdery finish is a more subtle touch, and doesn't scream for attention nearly as much.
So for this particular situation, on the modesty scale, I'd say:
- Skin-tone in matte or powder finish is the most modest
- Skin-tone in a satin or gloss finish is less modest
- Black is provocative (least modest)
