Idea on how to dress for a job interview? (Women)?

I'm a female, early 30's, interviewing for jobs in public relations in various departments at a University. The jobs would entail interacting with students and the general atmosphere is pretty casual. I am not a suit type of person. I have never worn one in my life, and I don't want a job that would expect me to wear one. I can't walk in heels. I need ideas on where to shop for interview clothes. My style is simple and classic--I like the GAP, for example. Would it be appropriate to wear a dress in a solid color with minimal jewelry? Also, pantyhose--really?

Having worked for 2 medical universities and a very prestigious university as a biologist, I can tell you that PR people are the school's representatives to the PARENTS of the students; the ones who pay the tuition and your salary.
Buy a suit and low heels. You're going to need both, especially if you are good enough to have them not hide you in the back office.
Parents want what they pay for to show.
