Possible Candidates of Knee Replacement: Causes and Symptoms

In the past, the knee has been approached through an incision 20-30cm in length, and the most common arthrotomy has been the medical parapatellar approach to get wide visibility and safe mobilization of the extensor mechanism with the goals of reproducible primary fixation, restoration of alignment, and optimal range of motion and ligament balance. But with the benefits offered by new technique, minimally invasive knee replacement has been gaining attention in the recent times as the way to improve patient satisfaction even more by reducing the post-operative pain and shorter rehabilitation period.

The aim of MIS total knee replacement is to minimize soft tissue damage, reduce the requirements for blood transfusion, shorten hospital stay, accelerate the time to full recovery, reduce pain, and improve cosmesis. Moreover, minimally invasive knee replacement can be done and has been shown to be beneficial to patients by minimizing surgical trauma, pain, and recovery. All of the varied minimally invasive techniques share common elements of reducing the trauma necessary for exposure, component alignment, soft tissue balance, and component fixation. Ultimately, these benefits of minimally invasive knee replacement result in a more satisfied patient.

A total knee replacement entails cutting and shaping all of the arthritic parts of the knee using precise measuring and cutting tools. The total knee implants that surgeons use generally consist of Titanium, cobalt-chrome, and polyethylene material. The implants are always cemented to the bone using special bone cement that ensures fixation of the implants. Minimally Invasive total knee replacements are done using a small incision that avoids cutting into any muscle, which was done in the past. Utilizing this technique, patients spend far less time in the hospital than with a traditional total knee replacement, and recovery is faster. Patients can usually start walking the next day after surgery and usually in two weeks walk in the office with a cane for suture removal.

It is found that the long-term results are quite effective when the minimally invasive partial knee replacement is performed in the right patients. Older studies indicated very poor results of the partial knee replacement, but these results are thought to be due to poor patient selection. If the minimally invasive procedure is done on a patient with too widespread arthritis, the results are very likely to be less than satisfactory. If your doctor does not recommend a partial knee replacement, you may be in this situation. If this is the case, further conservative treatment for example injections, physical therapy, medications, etc. or total knee surgery can be considered.  A primary concern about the minimally invasive surgical techniques is that limited exposure will lead to increased complications that jeopardize the long-term outcome of the arthroplastry. To know whether minimally invasive knee replacement is right for you or not, your surgeon is the best person to discuss with.
