Tights without knickers - any advice on brands?

Fashion magazines often say that the way to avoid seam lines and panty profiles showing with tight fitting skirts is to go for tights on their own. I don't like thongs - so they are no good to me.
I tried out tights on their own but I feel like I'm "flashing" - particularly with a short skirt - they are also quite uncomfortable on my sensitive bits. Opaques feel much better but are no good for a night out with a sexy skirt.
Does anyone know of any UK brands with very opaque "panty" sections but sheer legs that give comfort and preserve the privacy of what is between my legs?

I think perhaps control top tights might be your answer, they tend to be very opaque on the panty section, just make sure the control bit doesn't go too far down the leg. M & S do a good range and of course online stores are in abundance.
