What's the deal with exhaust sound and performance? Lots of answers please!?

I would like to make my car sound better. Is there special tips for certain types of cars? I have a 1988 Honda Accord and it has a stock exhaust but i'd like a nicer sound but not a loud loud one because its not the car. Could I just put a tip on there or would I need the complete exhaust system? I know they cost alot, maybe its not worth it. I heard that you can put a catalyser?(Cattalic converter). Does that make it sound different?

I am just simply looking for more of a sound than stock. Just a nice clean mid-volume sound.

You have a rather older model which make it hard to find a cat-back made for your car. I recommend going to an exhaust shop and have them make you 2.5 inch piping from the cat and connect it to a GReddy sp2 street exhuast. This is good for what your looking for because its polished and has the brand name engraved on the tip, it is also quiet at idle but when full throttle it has a nice deep tone to it. This should be a cheap route. Another possibility is a short ram or cold air intake, you will hear a difference and free up some horsepower for around 100 bucks
