What Can I Expect From A Holiday In Korea & Japan?

It'll be my first time visiting Korea and Japan soon and I'm really excited . So here're several questions...

1. How cold will it be in Korea & Japan during the Christmas/ New Year's day? How thick of a clothing must I need?

2. Heard that shopping in Japan is REALLY overly expensive. Is this true? And that Korea's Dongdaemun Market, can I get lovely affordable things from there, you know like souvenirs or clothes? And will it close on the 1st of January?

3. What tasty street food should I not give a miss?

4. Other than skiing, what else can I do in Korea's Yongpyong Ski Resort?

5. Where in Seoul can I get a photograph taken of me wearing the Korean traditional costume (Hanbok)?

6. Where in Japan can I get a photograph of me wearing the Japanese traditional cotume (kimono?)?

7. Can I really finish Tokyo Disneyland and Disneysea in a day each?

I have no experience with Korea, but after a good deal of time in Japan, I can answer that half.

1. It depends on where in Japan. It can get pretty chilly, think 30s to 50s (1 to 12 Celsius), in Tokyo around Christmas and New Year's. Plan your clothes accordingly.

2. Japan, especially Tokyo, has incredibly high prices on many consumer goods, often 20-100% more than in the US. However, outside the big cities you can often find decent deals on local handicrafts and food products. In addition, there are many small stores and street markets, even in the big cities, where you can find acceptable deals if you are willing to spend some time shopping around, especially on electronics (as in Akihabara in Tokyo).

3. I highly recommend the takoyaki (octopus balls). You also can't go wrong with a tempura or yakitori stand, especially in the local street markets, such as Tsukiji in Tokyo. For something sweet, try a crepe stand. The crepes are usually fantastic, if a bit girly. If you make it to Osaka, try some okonomiyaki, which is basically an anything-goes pancake. Every region has its own unique style, but I would argue that Osaka does it best.

6. There are dozens of places where you can get a geisha makeover and have some photos taken in a kimono. Kyoto has the most such businesses, being that it is arguably the center of geisha culture in Japan. 7. Yes, unless you really like to spend a lot of time sitting around or exploring every nook and cranny. Both parks are rather small by American standards. Disney Sea especially has very few rides and is mostly shows and scenic locations. I finished the park in about 5 hours back in September. Avoid the weekends and summer holidays, however, as the Japanese LOVE Disney and will fill the parks to capacity. I recommend a Tuesday or Wednesday in April-May or Septemeber-October to avoid the crowds.
