The grey squirrel spread as it wasnt native to this country. This often happens with introduced species, because the diseases and predators that exist in their natural habitat often dont exist in another...the rabbit is another example, its not native to britain, was introduced in the 12th century and is now a highly successful pest.

Red squirrels are rare now because they greys are larger (I think) and more successful, I believe they bully the red ones. Its a real shame, the reds are so uncommon and beautiful.

There are still red squirrels in Scotland. Apparently they were going to introduced a disease that would sterilise grey squirrels. Its a great idea. They are cute too but they're not native, and the red squirrels deserve to be here!
