When you wear a sari, do you have to wear it with a petticoat and choli, or can you just wear the cloth?

I am thinking about buying a sari because they are beautiful and exotic. The sari I am thinking of buying is kind of sheer, and I noticed that some Indian women wear sari with a petticoat and choli. Do I have to use a petticoat and choli, or can I just wear the cloth? Also, I am a black teenager, will it look weird for me to wear sair? I really love exploring different cultures and religions, and I especially love the beautiful and elegant look of saris and hijabs.
where can I buy the choli and petticoat from, if not online, do you think I could make one myself? how hard is it, and how long does it take? can you get it from Walmart? if not online, where can I get it from in Oklahoma? If I have no way to get a choli and petticoat, what could I substitute for choli and petticoat? could I use a nice cropped shirt and short skirt?

Yes, you have to wear petticoat and choli when you wear a sari. The petticoat serves two purposes, one it covers you properly when the saree is transparent, but more important, you tuck the hem of the saree in the petticoat and then wind the saree around you. Without petticoat it is not possible to tie the saree to you your body. It follows that the petticoat must not have elastic but it should have proper string or less to tie it to your waist.

Of course choli is also mandatory. You cover your upper part with the saree palloo.

I strongly advice you to be make friends with an old Indian lady in your area ( there will sure be many Indians around you ). Saree is a difficult apparel to wear and you need lots of practice to wear it. Same Indian lady can advice you to where to buy the saree. You can not substitue the petticoat and choli with anything else. By the way, I said an OLD Indian lady. I doubt if young Indian girls know anything about the saree.
