Can you help me analyze this Keats Sonnet?

Sonnet: Before He Went
BEFORE he went to feed with owls and bats
Nebuchadnezzar had an ugly dream,
Worse than an Hus'if's when she thinks her cream
Made a Naumachia for mice and rats.
So scared, he sent for that 'Good King of Cats'
Young Daniel, who soon did pluck away the beam
From out his eye, and said he did not deem
The sceptre worth a straw his Cushions old door-mats.
A horrid nightmare similar somewhat
Of late has haunted a most motley crew,
Most loggerheads and Chapmen we are told
That any Daniel tho' he be a sot
Can make the lying lips turn pale of hue
By belching out 'ye are that head of Gold.'

Any information about it would be appreciated.

Nobody has ever fully explained what Keats meant by this sonnet (which he never published). But we have strong evidence from his letters that it is related to the trials of William Hone in 1817.

William Hone was a liberal journalist who had satirised the Earl of Liverpool's deeply conservative government (government policies had contributed to a massive recession, and the rise of the Luddite movement) by writing political parodies of the Catechism and the Creed.

Hone was arrested and tried for blasphemy.

Keats - like most of the Romantics - was no Christian. So he was horrified that a reactionary government could use religious laws to muzzle any opposition (think of Sarah Palin riding on the Intelligent Design bandwagon today). Keats wrote a sonnet based on the story of Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel IV) ridiculing the government as the borderline insane Babylonian despot and praising Hone as Daniel.

The piece is a squib. It would have made sense to the group of Keats' friends who first saw it - but it was never intended for public consumption.

There is no reason to study this poem unless you are deeply fascinated by early nineteenth century secularism in the UK. And not much reason even then.

Interestingly the Attorney-General who served the writs - and is therefore the villain of the piece - was Sir William Garrow (who is currently the hero of a bustle-and-bodkin costume drama on the BBC).
