Central heating control options

It is a well known fact that purchasing a high quality, fuel efficient boiler will save you a packet in the long run. Nonetheless, it is also true that spending a bit of money on decent boiler controls can hugely improve the efficiency of your central heating system.

The combi boiler, or combination boiler, is by far the most common type in use today, and tends to fall into one of three categories. The first type comes with a standard timer pre-installed, which cannot be changed or replaced. The second type can be fitted with any compatible fascia-mounted timer. The third type can only use remotely mounted controls plugged into the boiler via a cable.

It is important that the type of controls fitted are suitable for the type of boiler, the central heating system, and the occupiers of the home that it is installed in. In some respects, making sure that you have suitable controls is more important than the type of boiler that you have.

TRVs (Thermostatic Radiator Valves) attached to radiators can help to keep room temperatures fairly constant by gauging the temperature in the room and turning the radiator off when it exceeds the preset temperature, and on when it begins to fall below.

When choosing a boiler and central heating control system, it is a good idea to think about where you are going to put the boiler. For example, if your boiler is going to be in a loft or an airing cupboard where access is relatively restricted, it would be better to go for remotely mounted control set, whereas if it was mounted in the kitchen, fascia mounted controls would probably be a better and cheaper option. You should always make sure that the type of boiler that you are buying is compatible with the type of controls that you will need.

Boilers that can accept external controls that plug into the front fascia connect to the thermostat via the sending and receiving of RF signals, whereas remote controls tend to have the thermostat integrated with the timer, although this arrangement entails a greater amount of wiring and potential disruption for the occupants of the property during installation.
