Is it better to use your fingers to pull back a bow or a release ?

When shooting a bow, ones shooting style and level of comfort with a particular method should always be considered. While there are advantages and drawbacks to both, either style can be made to produce consistent results.

Pros to using a release can include: Faster arrow speed. When using a release you obtain more draw back and have more tension in a central location on the string. This, in return, results in more uniform release of the string, and more speed. According to Tru-Ball, it can increase shooting speed by up to 8 feet per second. Also, consistency. As someone else said, when using fingers it is possible that the string can roll off your fingers. But this can be eliminated with the use of "No-Gloves", which are finger cushions that can be installed on the string.
***Note: It is important to maintain and keep a check on no-gloves for wear, and replace as necessary. After extended use, no gloves can wear and produce string roll.***

One factor to consider is whether or not you shoot pins, or if you shoot 'instinctively' or what most call free-style shooting ... basically shooting without pins. My father is an instinctive shooter, and for years and years he shot fingers. Well, when the latest and greatest fad of releases came along, he thought he would give a release a try. In turn, his shooting suffered. He wasn't able to achieve the consistent shooting results that he did with fingers. Once reverting back to fingers, he was a regular Fred Bear again... So, if you shoot instinctively, using fingers would DEFINITELY be considered a plus if you see consistent results in that manner.

All in all, the best thing to do is determine what works best for you. Practice often, and practice with consistency. Monitor and remember how you pull the bow back, where your fingers or your release touch your face when you get the string back. Practice your release method, pay attention to how you pull that trigger or how you release those strings.

In archery, practice definitely makes perfect. Once you find your stroke in shooting, stick with it. The best shooters, are the consistent shooters.
